Craig, of Evergreen Terrace also remains cautiously optimistic that Metal has come too far to be despoiled by corporate exploitation: “I think there’s too many quality bands that outweigh the second, third, fourth wave cookie cutter shit,” he said, “There’s too many quality bands in the scene that are getting attention right now that are going to influence a whole other wave of cookie cutter bands, but I think it’s a good thing… I think it’s good for Metal, as long as people don’t lose sight of what they’re doing and lose their heads.”
Heavy Metal’s history stretches back to the early years of Rock and Roll; in the 1960s, bands like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath helped to create the genre; bands like Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, and AC/DC popularized the genre, even as they paved the way for the Hair Bands of the 1980s, a decade that also saw the second era of Metal’s giants emerge, with acts like Metallica, Anthrax, Pantera and, of course, Megadeth. Though the late 1990s saw Metal’s popularity wane, it is obvious that music industry declarations that the trend was dead were premature, at the very least.
Whatever the future may hold, one thing is clear: Heavy Metal has weathered critics, crises and commerce, and remains a force to be reckoned with, its music in demand and the genre itself undeniably here to stay. Heavy Metal has earned its place as part of music’s history, past, present and future.
