The Anatomy of an Event

Posted by

By the time the show ended and we’d done our clean-up and close, we were exhausted, elated, nerved out and ready for more. There were some problems of course but nothing we couldn’t handle. We’d slightly over-estimated the number of people we could draw to the Club Soda, a fairly large venue for our purposes, and our ticket prices were a little too low, meaning that we didn’t quite make as much money as we’d have hoped; of course our main goal being ‘awareness’, we made out smashingly. However, everyone – from Club Soda’s management to the bands and performers we booked – said that ours was one of the best-organized shows they’d ever participated in.

The only real low point was coming up against the bureaucratic colossus of the City of Montreal. In their infinite wisdom the city decide to hit us with a whopping fine for littering. Littering? Yes; because they objected to some of our helpers having placed some flyers on parked cars in the downtown area. Who knew it was illegal to do this? Not that ignorance of the law is a proper defense but certainly given that the event the flyers were handed out for was a non-profit charity and neither CONFRONT or MAPMusic had ever had any citation prior to this one, a simple warning could have been issued? It’s just too bad that part the profits raised at the event will have to be used for something as trivial as this rather than going to helping out people in real need.

In any case, the MAPMusic Awareness Concert is only the first event that CONFRONT Presents… will produce. We’re already looking ahead at other dates, other venues, other bands…and we plan to bring them to Montreal soon. With the lessons learned and the experience gained during our inaugural concert, we will be better, stronger and more rockin’ next time out; and it’s going to be awesome!

editor’s note: CONFRONT would like to thank everyone who participated in the event – from the bands, to the sponsors, our host and all the staff and helping hands as well as all who came and/or donated in all possible ways…  we couldn’t have done it without all of you.
