SteveK on the new album from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
‘It’s Blitz!’, the third album from New York’s the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, delivers some fun and friendly Electro-Pop Alternative sounds, breaking away somewhat from their signature sound as they branch out and continue to develop as a band.
This one is a lot of fun to listen to, albeit a little light-weight, content wise. The question is whether or not the new sound (which while different is still distinctively Yeah Yeah Yeahs) will play well with die-hard fans.
Perusal of the fan reviews shows a mixed reception, though the ones loving ‘It’s Blitz!’ are clearly (if marginally) more numerous (at the time of this writing) than those who don’t like it. So, is it a case of people being afraid of change or loyal and forgiving fans?
All I know is that I really enjoyed this album, particularly the songs “Softshock”, “Dull Life”, and “Dragon Queen”. I enjoy the Europop tendencies that play here, a growth away from the Pop-Punk affectations of previous releases. The sound is a little more sophisticated, a little less raw, but still unquestionably this is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
All in all I think this is a fairly good album from the trio, and I look forward to hearing it live when they next make their way into Montreal.
