Lady Sovereign

Posted by

Last May I had the chance to sit down and chat with a very interesting, witty and passionate young woman. She was the first female artist from Britain to be signed on Def Jam! Her name: Lady Sovereign.

CONFRONT: Hi, Thanks for having us!

LADY SOVEREIGN: Thank you… thanks for your patience.

CONFRONT: no problems. So let me explain to you who we are. We are an online magazine called CONFRONT. Our motto is Dare Defy Provoke… Dare to Listen, Defy Stereotype and Provoke Change. We want our readers to see that there is more to music then Top 40, you know, we want to help them discover different styles and new artists.

LS: Great, love that concept, it’s important…

CONFRONT: Thanks, we do love music and feel that this is important too. Ok so first we start with what we call CONFRONT questions… these are fun questions we ask to each our interviewees.

LS: oh cool.

CONFRONT: so let’s start by what would be the first and the last CD you bought??

LS: The first…oh wow… the first… I think, it was a Cash money album…Juvenile or maybe even Lil Wayne back in the day…I’m not sure and the last one, I think it was mine J I gave my friend some money to go and by my CD! I don’t know why…

CONFRONT: no problems, it’s a fun thing to do…

LS: Yeah, it was funny.

CONFRONT: ok so first and last concert you remember attending as a fan?

LS: OMG the thing is I play so many shows… I  just don’t go and see show to see shows you know…

CONFRONT: ok then who would be your favourite artist to see live??

LS: I would have to say…Basement Jaxx puts on an amazing show; it’s always a lot of fun.

CONFRONT: love their music do you have any guilty pleasures musically?

LS: yeah there are a lot of those actually.

CONFRONT: interesting.

LS: it’s hard to actually define a guilty pleasure though…

CONFRONT: well, something that you know you love and it makes you feel good when you listen to it but it’s not necessarily something you fan would intent you being a fan of??

LS: let me think… wow… there are so many…

CONFRONT: you can just mention one.

LS: …can I come back to that one??

CONFRONT: of course. Ok let’s talk about the new album. Sophomore album…

LS: why isn’t just called the second album?

CONFRONT: cause it’s sounds good .

LS: yeah …

CONFRONT: so second album… did you feel any pressure to do better, to do well??

LS: well I wouldn’t call it pressure I would say there were many circumstances that made me believe that I maybe wasn’t going to happen you know…

CONFRONT: yeah the record label situation?

LS: yeah and also I crashed and burned, I was out of it, even a bit depressed at one point so…

CONFRONT: Happy about the final product??

LS…Yeah…

CONFRONT: happy as can be in the circumstances??

LS: yeah I mean, you know it was kind of like, you know… I might be re-releasing it with more songs soon, we shall see…

CONFRONT: interesting!!  Do you consider yourself a role model?

LS:… me a role model?? Wow.

CONFRONT: by that I mean…do you consider yourself as a pioneer for females in the business??

LS: it’s hard because everyone as to make it themselves and live their own experiences you know so… it’s harsh to say but if it’s meant to be it’s meant to be, you know. I mean if you enjoy to write and enjoy to rap go for it…but sometimes don’t expect to much and be prepared anyway…because now a days it’s so difficult, well it’s easy to be recognised in the music business but…it’s hard…

CONFRONT: to grow and stay there?

LS: exactly. Because there is so many people doing it now… you know…

CONFRONT: I agree. Ok Grime female MC, can you explain this to our readers, I’m assuming most of them are not familiar with that genre.

LS: yeah of course, when I started in this business I was linked to the Grime crowd, but that’s not what I do though…

CONFRONT: yeah I know…

LS: I just don’t like people telling me I’m grime that’s all.

CONFRONT: for sure… ok so one last question before I have to let you go… what would you like you legacy to be? Lady Sovereign in 10 years? Or even Lady Sovereign in 20 years? Would you want to continue doing this? Do something else??

LS: well… yeah I think I have to say that people are going to have to understand that my style is always going to be evolving and I just hope that my fans keep with me you know

CONFRONT: yeah for sure, fans are the key.

LS: exactly.

CONFRONT: well thank you this was a pleasure.

LS: thank you.
