Even though most critics and reviews about ‘Life Starts Now’ were extremely positive, what would the point of journalism and media in general be if there weren’t those who disagreed? Some have said that the album was lacking its own style and compared it to a mix between Nickelback and Linkin Park.
“I think those people don’t actually listen! I think people don’t listen, they just hear it you know and they’re just stupid!” Brad commented, clearly unfazed by the negativity, to which Adam added: “Most of the reviews that have come out are the bad ones. We’ve had bad reviews on all of our records, those people that review the record; they don’t like it just because they don’t like the band, they don’t like our style and they don’t like what it is and probably never will so, it’s just ignorance basically I think.”
Obviously there is no need to ever worry that Three Days Grace would let critics take them down. They are visibly here to stay!
As the interview wound down, I threw the boys a few quick fire questions. What would be playing on Adam Gonthier and Brad Walst’s music players if I were to press PLAY at that exact moment? “Mr. Hurricane by Beast” will blast out on Adam’s and “Brand New’s new record, Daisies” is what Brad rocks out to these days.
Who do they dream to play with someday? Well it seems Adam was curious to know as he asked his band mate: “Who do you play with in your dreams man?” and Brad proudly told him: “Michael Jackson man!” to which Adam replied: “Really? I play with Paul McCartney!” They both started laughing, clearly tired but amused. I suggested legendary Pearl Jam singer Eddie Vedder as I remembered Adam played a cover of “Black” in one of their past tours. Smiling, he said: “Yeah for sure! That would be really cool, that’d be huge. I’m a big Pearl Jam fan, big Eddie fan, that would be awesome.”
Which song represents them the most at the moment? “Beast, Mr Hurricane” Adam answered. As Brad took a few moments to think this one out a little Adam suggested “Mister Would You Please Help My Pony” by Ween. “Oh yeah! That represents me, most days!” Brad agreed and they both started singing the chorus, ending in laughs once again.
Last but not least, if Three Days Grace was to disappear in the Bermuda Triangle tomorrow, what would they expect the media to say? Without any hesitation, Adam said: “Well all the media would just say: Thank God they’re gone!” Immediate laughter ensued!
And what would they want their fans to remember them for? “Well they should just remember the good times!” Brad simply said; a fitting end to our time together. Adam’s last words were a little more comically driven: “Maybe we shouldn’t fly that plane tonight then!”
I had a great time hanging out with Adam and Brad which contradicts any theory that would suggest a band that writes dark and depressing lyrics can not be a fun band. As I thanked them for their time, Adam left for a couple minutes and fetched someone in the Musique Plus office who finally got him his drink in the vending machine. Oh what satisfaction! A cozy atmosphere filled out the small cafeteria as we kept on chatting for a little while. Six million albums sold or not, Three Days Grace will never forget where they come from and are one of the most down to earth group of people I’ve come to meet. They enjoy every single minute of their success and I urge you to do the same with them when they come back to your city in the coming months!
