Judith had the chance to interview Montreal’s own Barn Burner
Last week I had the chance to do a phone interview with Kevin from Barn Burner. This up and coming Canadian band , based out of Montreal, just had their first official world wide release on Metal Blade Record. Here his my conversation with Kevin
CONFRONT: Hi Kevin, Judith CONFRONT Magazine how are you?
KEVIN: Hi Judith. I’m great how are you?
CONFRONT: I’m great. Thanks a lot for allowing us to have an interview with you
KEVIN: The pleasure is mine
CONFRONT: So first let me explain briefly what we are. Our magazine is called CONFRONT Magazine. We are an online music magazine that some friends and I started 3 and a half years ago. We want to bring music to the world!
KEVIN: This is great
CONFRONT: Ok so let me start by some fun questions we call our CONFRONT questions that we ask all of our interviewees
KEVIN: Perfect
CONFRONT: What would be the first and the last CD you remember buying?
KEVIN: Oh Man. I haven’t actually purchased a CD in so long… I’m guilty of downloading for the past several years so…I think the last CD I purchased was…Mastodon’s “Blood Mountain”
CONFRONT: Very Cool, and the last one?
KEVIN: Oh shit…It was either Alice in Chains’ “Dirt” or Metallica’s “Justice for All”
CONFRONT: Very good choices
KEVIN: but it might have been both at the same time…
CONFRONT: That’s all good no problemJ. What would be the first and the last concert you’ve attended as a fan?
KEVIN: I think the first concert I’ve ever went to was Lollapalooza, when I was very young. I was like 9 or 10 at the time, in 1994. Cypress Hill was playing and Hole and Jesus Wizard, a whole pile of bands… that was a pretty neat experience. I went with w friend, his mom took us, was pretty cool.
CONFRONT: for sure pretty cool, and the most recent one?
KEVIN: ok, let me think… that’s a tricky one…you know I play so many shows that I can’t remember any that I just went to…
CONFRONT: That’s all good, it’s really no problem… I’m going to go ahead with the next question and if it comes back to you we’ll get back to it.
KEVIN: alright
CONFRONT: Do you have any guilty pleasures musically? Anything you’re not too proud of liking?
KEVIN: (thinking and looking through is iTunes)…wow once again that’s a tricky one…
CONFRONT: ok let me give you an example…for me it’s 80’s pop music… I don,t listen to it all the time but I love it
KEVIN: Yeah I know but it seems to be listening to so much Heavy Metal, there isn’t much else in my music collection
CONFRONT: it’s ok
KEVIN: ah dammit, sorry I’m just so bad at this
CONFRONT: for real it’s no worries
KEVIN: ok
CONFRONT: Metal Blade record is giving your debut album “Bangers” its official world wide release, how does this make you feel?
KEVIN: it’s really a dream. It’s opening up some opportunities for us. Hopefully eventually we’ll be able to live from our music
CONFRONT: I’m sure you will
KEVIN: oh thanks
CONFRONT: Tell us more about Bangers, how long have you guys worked on it? What would be you writing process? Do you work as a group or?
KEVIN: I basically just write everything and come to the group with a basic arrangement and then we work on it as a group and then the song evolves. Everybody has ideas as we go and then we make it our own.
CONFRONT: This is great!! What are you personal influences?
KEVIN: Just a big pile of heavy metal stuff. It varies from older to more contemporary. Iron Maiden, Judas’ Priest
CONFRONT: Did they have any influences on your song writing? No, I really want to write in my own style, not sound like anyone else. It’s not always easy because of course eventually it might sound like or have the vibe or a certain song or a group but in the end it’s all ours.
CONFRONT: Do you have any advices you’d give to the young up and coming musicians and song writers?
KEVIN: As much as I would love to, I don’t think I can give advice myself. I would say just keep on trucking. Don’t give up, keep on trying and working hard. Keep practicing even if you think you’re the best.
CONFRONT: Just keep on trucking right?
KEVIN: exactly
CONFRONT: So does being from Canada make it easier or harder when it comes to making it?
KEVIN: I would say it makes it harder being from Canada. It’s a small world especially here so much harder to make it and well most bands have to go to US labels. But we made it and hopefully we’ll make it even further.
CONFRONT: once again I’m sure you guys will
KEVIN: I appreciate it
CONFRONT: Finally last but not least what would you want your legacy to be?
KEVIN: I would hope to have memorable records, that people have good time at our shows and that we made a difference in the heavy metal world.
CONFRONT: that’s great. Thanks again for doing an interview with us
KEVIN: no problem
