Judith talks to lead singer Rody Walker–
On March 22nd 2010, I had the chance to have a conversation with Protest the Hero’s lead singer, Rody Walker. They are an up and coming progressive metal Canadian Band. Read this interview to learn more about them and discover their unique music style.
CONFRONT: Hi Rody
RODY: Hi Judith
CONFRONT: thanks for giving us some time in your very busy touring schedule and allowing us to have an interview
RODY: no problems, it’s our pleasure
CONFRONT: Great, so first I would like to start by explain to you what we are. Well our magazine is called CONFRONT magazine. We are an online music magazine that some friends and I started 3 and a half years ago. We want to bring music to the world!
RODY: this is awesome
CONFRONT: let me start with some fun questions we ask all of our interviewees, we call them the CONFRONT questions!
RODY: cool, cool
CONFRONT: What would be the first and the last CD you remember buying?
RODY: the first CD I think I ever bought must have been something like Bush X
CONFRONT: wow nice
RODY: and the most recent one most have been like “Potemkin City Limits” by Propagandhi
CONFRONT: very nice, what would be the first and last Concert you remember attending as a fan?
RODY: the first concert I’ve ever been to was Silver Chair and Blink 182
CONFRONT: wow, back in the days that was big!
RODY: yeah! The last concert I’ve been to…wow like a legitimate concert? Because you know we play concerts all the time…
CONFRONT: yeah but like I have a day off and we are in this town, and so and so is playing, let’s go…
RODY: ok wow… let me think… yeah I know it was Callahan during CMW Canadian Music Week)like… last week
CONFRONT: pretty cool, love CMW
RODY: yeah got to love it J
CONFRONT: are any of those bands been influences to you??
RODY: I think, and I’m not only talking about myself but also as a band, if we could have one collective influence, I think it would have to be Propagandhi…it’s a band that we grew up on and it’s a band that we continue to absolutely adore as we grow up. They’ve been amazing.
CONFRONT: great do you have any others?
RODY: yeah, definitely, vocally I would have to say Symphony X and of course Jeff Buckley…
CONFRONT: never go wrong with Jeff Buckley
RODY: yeah
CONFRONT: ok enough about that… J let’s talk about the new album, Gallop meets the Earth…how do you guys feel about coming out with a live album?
RODY: well it’s definitely very different, it was a lot less creative work, which kind of suck, because like…you know, the awesome part of being a musician is the actually creative process so when you’re releasing a live album is just like… ok so here is what we recorded, here is the mix and mastered version of it and that’s what is coming out…so it’s definitely fun but less creative
CONFRONT: totally understandable but fans love it so…
RODY: oh yeah that’s for sure
CONFRONT: but while you guys are releasing this live album are you still working on new material??
RODY: oh for sure…
CONFRONT: actually when It comes to new material, do you guys have a process, a method, a way that you come up with your songs?? An album??
RODY: yeah everyone pretty much have their own jobs, like Luke will write all the rifs and them come to us so we can jam all through it and then we all come up with our parts and I mix all of them up in confusion and chaos…
CONFRONT: I love it confusion and chaos…it actually describes you guys very well….in a good way, it represent you.
RODY: I appreciate that.
CONFRONT: you guys are relatively new in this business, not that you haven’t worked a lot but more in the sense that you are being more and more known by the public and by the media…do you have any advices for the new comers??
RODY: yeah I think the most important thing for young bands to do is to get out there and play. Play before you get a 100,000 hits on your myspace page or facebook you know…new band right now don’t play in front of audiences anymore it’s hard for them to see if they have a chemistry and if they can actually do it live… because this is the basic of this business, being able to perform…
CONFRONT: for sure!! So when are you guys coming out with a new material album??
RODY: euh… hopefully… I want to say next Spring but for sure it will be in 2010, just don’t’ know when exactly!!
CONFRONT: nice, I’m sure your fans are going to be very happy to read this J
RODY: hopefully!
CONFRONT: I don’t want to be keeping you for too long… let me ask you one last question… what would you want your legacy to be?? Rody Walker and Protest the Hero in like 10-20 years…
RODY:I hope we never compromise our integrity and that people recognize that even if we don’t sell millions of records…
CONFRONT: I’m pretty sure they will… you guys seems to have a very good fan base so it starts from there you know
RODY: I do hope so
CONFRONT: for sure well thank you very much Rody
RODY: thank you
