Drake @ Metropolis Review!

Our special correspondant Myriam tells us all about the one and only Drake and his performance in Montreal!

After his recently released first official LP ‘Thank Me Later’ and so many hits under his belt since his mixtapes such as Room for Improvement and “So Far Gone”, rap artist Drake, with a merited departed rookie-of-the-year of Hip-Hop status, couldn’t keep his fans famished any longer without offering himself on tour.  Montreal finally got its share this past Sunday, July 18th.  And I sure was waiting for this moment, myself.

INT. LATE EVENING – Metropolis, Montreal.
All-black attired, he takes the stage to his white standing mic turned sideways to the crowd, a visually undistracting contrast to the live music soon unveiling. With both confidence and swag, he starts off the night blasting the oft-quoted ‘Last name “EVER” first name “GREATEST”‘… the crowd including myself, goes crazy as he unfolds the song ‘Forever’ followed by his verse on the remix of Alicia Keys’ ‘Unthinkable’.
All alone with his five-men-band, Drake welcomes us to his world. He transitions to songs “Lust for Life” followed by “Fireworks” off of Thank Me Later. These tracks along with the others unfortunately all demanded to be short-rendered – too many good hits, so little time.
Keeping the crowd hyped by his own excitement, he goes in on the it and brings the house down with the track ‘Unstoppable’ (how I wished Santogold was there!)’til he breaks it off sweet-talking the ladies, especially the girl he brings on stage – we could smell the envy. He compensates to his female fans telling them how he’d spend “A Night Off” with the song of the same name. He sings his way to “Successful” then calls out the “Fancy” girls in the room throwin’ the lady-oriented track to them, and continues the flow with his latest smash hit “Find your Lovin’”.
But what’s a Drake concert without the song “Best I Ever Had”? The crowd that litterally knew ALL the lyrics of almost ALL the songs by heart showed him how it’s done here; when we love, we show it, and it showed as he threw down on the hit. Montreal could most definitely be the best he ever had.
He quite abrubtly finished the 75-minute journey with the song “Over”. He just, well… left the stage. But then, the track is a prelude of what is to gladly come. With his talent and success, it is undeniable that he is “far from over…” We will surely see much of him in the future (the Bell Center maybe?). Truth be told, Montreal will be patiently waiting and as we thanked him then and now, we’ll keep “thanking him later” for it.
