If you’ve never been to the province of Quebec, Canada, you’ve probably never heard of singer Marie-Mai. That is the main reason why you should definitely read this article to the last word! Because once she will become an international superstar, you will be able to say you heard about her first. She is Quebec’s best pop -rock act; she’s won many awards and sold hundred of thousands of albums to prove it! Now, she’s ready to conquer the English market, but the real question is: Are you ready for Marie-Mai?
On Friday June 11th, the Confront crew was invited to the premiere of Marie-Mai’s new show: ‘Version 3.0’ at Montreal’s Bell Center. I was happy to go because I had been to Marie-Mai’s first ever concert back in 2004 and I wanted to see the difference and the progress she had made in the past six years. Well I was very satisfied with what I saw and heard because it was night and day! Marie-Mai was good back then but it seemed to me with ‘Version 3.0’ that she had reached a complete other level. The following week, I had the chance to speak with her about it. “Everything was different, of course; my confidence, I’ve had a lot of experience, I’ve done a lot of touring. You learn a lot when you are on the road. The crowd also was craaaaaazy! They were going nuts!” She told me. Indeed they were! The twenty-six year old singer kept telling me how incredible it was and I witnessed it myself at that concert; she most definitely has the best fans! From really young kids to their grand-parents, they were all there. Sure the kids and teenagers present screamed the loudest and my ears could testify that the youngsters were a majority in that 20 000 seat arena.
In 2003, she decided to audition for a television show that became the most watched ever in the history of Quebec television: Star Académie. Not far from the American and Canadian Idol concept, Star Académie is a reality show starring unknown local Quebec talents chosen by the public. Marie-Mai reached the women’s finals but didn’t win the competition. With millions of viewers every week, the bomb of energy that she is sure got noticed and didn’t get thrown away once she was off the show! In the fall of 2004, the new French pop-rock revelation released her first album as a singer and songwriter: ‘Inoxydable’. The princess of pop that we now know had to find her way as a solo artist instead of an ex-academician: “I’ve had to go get people one at a time, one by one. I didn’t start off at the top. I remember my first tour; it wasn’t sold out every night. There were people there but definitely not like today. I had to work a lot. I’m ready to do that again in Canada if that’s possible.” She explained. With her new English single “Do you” being released nationwide, she is aiming at a new market: “It’s a challenge because the market over the United States and over Canada is very different. It’s night and day. It’s really important to meet the right people. People who believe in you, people who want to go in the same direction as you, so that they don’t want to change you. That will definitely be a challenge but you know what, I loved conquering Quebec one people at a time and I’m sure I’ll enjoy doing that in Canada or the United States one people at a time too.” Marie-Mai said with confidence.
The young tattooed woman always had the gift of music which probably comes from her father who was a musician himself. “I wrote my first song when I was 6 years old. I didn’t know I wanted to be a singer, hell I didn’t even know what a singer was. I barely knew how to write. The music was in me. I remembered being soooo mad and going to the piano and just banging on it. When I was happy, I sat down and played some lullabies and stuff. I always used music as a way of expression. I remember being in sixth grade and not listening to the teacher at all; dreaming about being on stage and me singing and dancing. It’s always been a part of me and I don’t think I could have done anything else really!” She isn’t just a singer; she is an amazing songwriter too. I had heard her say that she writes French songs in English first and then translates them. I asked her if she still works that way today: “Lately I’ve been trying to write songs in French first just because it’s a good work. It’s always harder to write songs in French because there are so many words; Poetry is… I want to say deeper than English; we have a lot of choices for words in French. As in English, everything comes more naturally to me. I grew up in French and English, my dad’s English, so it’s always been easier for me. To be able to sit down and write a song in French is actually a lot harder for me.”
If her name or her face seems familiar to you, it’s probably because you saw her at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic closing ceremony along with three billion other people. She had the chance to perform her single: “Emmène-moi” (Bring Me). Did this help her pursuing her career in English? “I don’t know I certainly hope so. I’ve had so many comments from people all over the world. I’ve had people from Brazil, Europe, Japan and China. It was one of the greatest performances I’ve ever done. Not technically because I was so nervous but as visibility, I hope it will help me.” To be able to receive international feedback like she did is largely owed to our good old friend, the World Wide Web. It’s a big part of the relationship between an artist and its audience. Some artists are really present on the internet, some aren’t. “I could spend many hours a day to communicate with them. Sometimes I’m on tour and I write them on the road and I think that every artist should do the same. Basically, the people who follow you on Twitter or follow you on Facebook or your website, they are the ones buying your record, they are the ones buying their tickets to your concert. The least you can do is giving them attention. The least you can do is taking five minutes of your day and say Hi.” Marie-Mai confessed that she is a big internet user. She can go on Facebook every five minutes or so and that’s why she hasn’t given in to Twitter yet. “I tried to stay out of it for the longest time but I think I’ll do it. But it’s so important. I think it’s the best way to communicate with your fans. Like a couple of years back, you didn’t have that. To be able to communicate with artists you had to be part of a fan club or you had to go through so many things. It wasn’t as personal; it wasn’t as close as it is now. Basically it’s magic. I wished I had this opportunity when I was younger to communicate with my idol so it’s definitely something I love to do.” Speaking of idols, I then asked Marie-Mai which one inspired her the most and she immediately answered, Gwen Stefani: “She hasn’t done much in the past years so we gotta do something. I would also love to work with Chantal Kreviazuk. She is an amazing songwriter. She’s really talented.” She also told me about who she would dream to work with.
Marie-Mai surely has a bright future ahead of her. She has a lot in store for Canada and the rest of the world, it really is just getting started for this gifted young woman. The artist who was born on the south-shore of Montreal, Quebec, doesn’t want us to know her only for her amazing live abilities, but also for her songwriting talent. “That’s one of my biggest goals. As much as I like to write songs for myself, I would love to work with good songwriting teams for other people.” When asked where she saw herself in twenty years, she answered in the same direction: “I hope that in twenty years I will have recorded many songs with many artists. I hope to have proven myself as a songwriter with people from Quebec, Canada, United States and Europe. I really want to do that! And I hope to have toured the world. You have to dream big!” And dreaming big is really what she has been doing since she’s been a kid, but more importantly over the course of the past seven years. She was able to remove her “reality TV star” badge and prove herself to be a hard worker, out of the box thinker, over the top entertainer and great singer that we know now today.
We ended the conversation with what was in store for her in the next few weeks: “More touring. Go on vacation for a month. That’s going to be exciting because I never had a break in seven years, so I’m gonna enjoy some time off. The tour is going to start all over again in September. We are gonna do another Bell Center on November 19th and touring and touring and touring. Recording an EP. I really want to record something in English so maybe five or six songs to be able to release something so that people can start listening to my music in English.” Marie-Mai was often compared to artists such as Avril Lavigne (it’s the rock outfit more than anything else I would have to say) or more recently Katy Perry, but you will be the one to judge. My opinion is that she doesn’t fit in any category and I’m sure everyone she will reach soon will find that for themselves too. She is the one and only Marie-Mai. She’s ready for the world, are you ready for her?
