Show Review: Hot Chelle Rae at L’Olympia

Nashville pop band Hot Chelle Rae played their first Montreal show at L’Olympia yesterday in front of a crowd that consisted of probably 95% girls. You could definitely hear that when they started playing and all those girls screamed at the top of their lungs. The venue wasn’t packed but the fans that were there and that were all packed together in the front made up for it. Singer Ryan Follesé even challenged the crowd to sing louder than him for a part of their cover of ‘Teeneage Dream’ and I think they did a pretty good job. He seemed impressed as well.

The band did a few of old songs for fans who might have known songs from their “Lovesick Electric” days. Whether they knew it or not, he taught them the album’s namesake line for them to sing along to during ‘I Like To Dance’. They mostly played songs from their latest album though and they also played a new song called ‘Wish’. The crowd went wild when they said it was the first time they were playing it in Canada.

Towards the end of their set, two lucky fans got the chance to get pulled onto the stage and help sing the rap part of ‘I Like It Like That’. I probably would’ve been too shy to do that myself but they seemed to have had a blast!

When the band came back for an encore, loud high-pitched screams filled the venue as they played their hit ‘Tonight Tonight’ a second time to finish off their set. Having randomly stumbled upon their first record randomly back in 2009, I had a song I really liked in that one and I was honestly a little disappointed that they didn’t play it. All in all though, they had a great stage presence and I think they delivered a fantastic set.
