Bands: Bon Iver & Sigur Rós (suggested by Justin Foley of Killswitch Engage)

by

This week, we’re coming at you with an artist’s suggestion. When I interviewed Justin from Killswitch Engage at Heavy MTL, I asked him what music he’s currently listening to and that he would like to recommend. As he answered, he ended up giving me two bands: Bon Iver and Sigur Rós. Kind of far from their own sound but you’d be surprised by the variety of music genres on an iPod, be it from someone playing metal or pop music. Here’s what he had to say about the two bands:

“Bon Iver, it’s really good. I listen the first two or three songs off one of their records on repeat over and over again. It’s not metal by any stretch. It’s sort of in the Sigur Rós vein. It’s really cool! We actually did one festival with them [Sigur Rós] and our set was at the same time as theirs; it was the worst! Such a bummer. I got to see two minutes of it as I was walking to our stage and walking past theirs and that’s all I got to see.”

Bon Iver is a band originally formed by Justin Vernon, an indie folk singer-songwriter. The name comes from French phrase “Bon hiver” [Have a good winter]. Since their beginnings in 2007, they have released two full-length albums and two EPs. They also have the chance to say they’ve won two Grammy awards in 2012.

Coming from Iceland, Sigur Rós is a band that is known for their ethereal sound, blending many different types of genres and elements to create it. What also sets them apart is their singer’s falsetto voice.
