Victoria Duffield

by

When I was in College, I used to practice my interviewing skills with my youngest sister, who is now 17.  It came very handy when I had the chance to interview the very talented Victoria Duffield, who happens to be the same age as my sister.

CONFRONT: First of all, congrats on the album!

VICTORIA: Thank you!

CONFRONT: How’s the response so far?

VICTORIA: The response has been awesome!  I wasn’t expecting [the album] to crack the top ten the first day and then getting to number 7 on iTunes for the albums, I didn’t anticipate that all!  The response has been better than I thought; hearing people’s favourite songs from tweets or by Facebook, it’s awesome to have that immediate feedback!  And I’m looking for my first tour to play these songs live for the first time and to advertise my album for the fans!

CONFRONT: So it will be the first tour for this album!  Do you think you’ll have your own Victoria Duffield show soon?

VICTORIA: I hope so!  My album has 8 tunes so I don’t think I’ll have my own show yet but I’m definitely looking for that in the future, have more albums to have my own Victoria Duffield tour!  It’s definitely a dream of mine.

CONFRONT: I know it’s your first date on this tour and also the first date of the tour itself in Canada.  Do you expect anything for tonight?

VICTORIA: I’m just really excited, I’m not really sure of what to expect, I think a big energetic crowd, ready to have fun with me, and the rest of the show with all the other amazing acts, I’m just expecting a great big show.

CONFRONT: Is it the first time you tour in an arena?

VICTORIA: I performed in arenas before, in Abbotsford [British Columbia, where she's from] but not like a capital city’s main arena so this is my first time and I’m super stoked!

CONFRONT: Is there a song in particular that you’re really excited to play live?

VICTORIA: I’m excited this time because I have new songs that I haven’t performed yet so that’s something I’m looking forward to but I always look forward to perform my first single “Shut up and dance”, it’s always a fun moment with the crowd to get them into the show and sing with me, I always look forward to closing the show with it because it’s a good party song to get involved with the audience!

CONFRONT: Because since they’ve known it for a while they can sing with you!

VICTORIA: Exactly, yeah!

CONFRONT: I know that you’ve wrote a song with Josh Ramsay and that you took part in the creation process; is it important for you to take part in it?

VICTORIA: Yes, I co-wrote all the songs on my album and it’s something that I’ve never thought I would do, that I would have co-written all of it so I feel good about it, it’s a great accomplishment.  It’s something I think is very important, to just be more connected to my music and performing, it comes from a deeper place and you just feel closer to your music and you’re able to tell a story to the audience and be more a part of your show in so many aspects.

CONFRONT: You’re really into it; it’s not only performing or only singing!

VICTORIA: Exactly, it’s everything!

CONFRONT: Is there a song that you’ve co-written that you’re particularly proud of?

VICTORIA: It’s hard to pick only one, it feels like every song is your baby *laughs*, you’re so connected to it, let’s see… the ballad!  I wanted to have a song that is more of a ballad so the last song “Final warning”, I’m proud of it; to have that one song that kind of hit the spot, has a good message and have a good vibe.

CONFRONT: Can you tell me how you’ve came to make music, because I know that you used to dance, act and… when did you decide “I want to make music”?

VICTORIA: I’m still continuing to train in all the other aspects, it’s definitely awesome, I love it all, it’s something I really enjoy!  I mean, I’ve always been writing songs, even when I was little, about like, butterflies and stuff, and I’ve always loved poetry so it’s always something I’ve looked forward to in English classes.  Being around music all the time, and growing up with music around as a dancer, it had such a huge influence on me, so making music was just kind of an obvious next step.

CONFRONT: Even the style of music you do is related to your other passions because you can dance with the music you do!

VICTORIA: Exactly and that’s why pop music is something I wanted to pursue, it’s my favorite style and it’s something that has been around me all the time, especially as a dancer because you hear music all the time, you fall in love with it, and I wanted to make some of my own.

CONFRONT: Lydia (@brokenmusicgirl) wants to know what it was like to perform at the  “Karv l’Anti-Gala” on VRAK.TV, to do the opening and closing acts.

VICTORIA: I loved it, it was so awesome!  The audience’s response was awesome and it was bigger than I thought.  I heard the event was going to be fun and big, but it was more fun and bigger than expected, you know, with the red carpet, and everyone was so excited to be there and the show just ran so smoothly.  Unfortunately I haven’t been able to watch it back; I hope to do that soon!  The organization, the show, the red carpet, it was just awesome.  It’s a show I will always remember and put on my list of favourites.

CONFRONT: So that would be something that if we’d ask you to be part of it again you’d say yes in a heartbeat!

VICTORIA: Oh, for sure *laughs*

CONFRONT: What are your top 5 favorite songs currently?

VICTORIA: I love Maroon 5′s “one more night”, Justin Bieber’s “As long as you love me”, I still love listening to the Backstreet Boys and *Nsync so the top song on my iPod is still probably “Tearin’ up my heart” *laughs* I still love that song!  It also depends how I feel, for example if I feel chilly I listen to “dreaming with a broken heart” from John Mayer, if I’m feeling like I want to dance, I’ll play Justin Timberlake’s “sexy back”!

CONFRONT: That’s a classic! I used to listen to these songs [*Nsync & Justin Timberlake] when I was back in high school but on a CD player!

VICTORIA: Yeah exactly! *laughs*

CONFRONT: And what do you enjoy most about Montreal?

VICTORIA: I love my fans from Montreal.  I’ve heard the shopping here is amazing, everyone tells me how great it is, but I haven’t had time to just go shopping, but that would be on my list.  Otherwise I love coming here to perform, I love to meet with my fans, I just always say how my support and my fans are awesome and I always look forward to it.

CONFRONT: You couldn’t leave on tour without…

VICTORIA: My dancers and my phone!

CONFRONT: It makes it easier to stay in touch since you’re across Canada!

VICTORIA: Yeah, that’s for sure!

CONFRONT: Milk is to cookies what Victoria Duffield is to…

VICTORIA: Performing.

CONFRONT: That’s interesting, I like it!  And if you could star in a Disney movie, which one would it be and why?

VICTORIA: Cinderella!  Because when I was younger I always secretly wanted to be a Disney princess.  Also, I used to be blonde too!

CONFRONT: That’s why you could relate to her!  I hope though your life wasn’t like hers!

VICTORIA: No!  The Prince Charming was the part of it that I liked! *laughs*

CONFRONT: Your guilty pleasure is…

VICTORIA: Probably Wunderbars and Bueno bars.

CONFRONT: Like the kinder surprise eggs!

VICTORIA: Yes!

CONFRONT: Even if you’re not a kid you have to get them!

VICTORIA: I know right?!

CONFRONT: I don’t know if they have this in every cinema theatre but here when you take a kid combo it comes with small popcorn and a kinder surprise egg.

VICTORIA: I would be getting that every time!

CONFRONT: So that’s it, thank you very much for your time, I hope you’ll have a great time tonight and congratulations again on your album!

VICTORIA: Cool!  Thank you very much!
