Carly Rae Jepsen & Owl City Getting Sued?

by

Carly Rae Jepsen and Owl City are two of the biggest names in pop music right now with their collaborative song ‘Good Time’. The song is fun, summery and SO catchy- but have they also made the mistake of copying another artist?

Alabama singer/songwriter Allyson Nichole Burnett has filed a lawsuit against the two artists for copying a unique vocal motif on her track ‘Ah It’s a Love Song’. Burnett claims that she has suffered significant psychological damage & has been accused of copying the Jepsen-Young track. She also says that her reputation as an independent artist will be significantly damaged from the situation.

You can read more specifics about the case & the similarities of the two songs right HERE. Listen to both below and tell us what you think!

  1. No way. I don’t think this is enough musical similarity to say that Adam ripped the melody off. Besides the fact that he would never do something like that, it’s only 4 notes that sound similar, and if you looked hard enough through pop music I’m sure you could find many more instances of it. Also, the melody in question only occurs twice in Burnett’s song, and it happens many more time in Adam Young’s composition. If this girl sues, she’s gonna lose. She doesn’t have nearly enough to stand and you know Owl City’s label and Carly’s label are gonna have top dog lawyers on the case. It sucks that it is slightly similar, but this girl just needs to move forward. ‘Good Time’ was an enormous success and if this girl calls even more attention to herself by suing (and maybe she already has) it’s going to hinder her career far more than it would have if she’d just kept her head down and moved forward with her career by writing more original music.

    • Those are some REALLY good points. I must admit when I listened to her song at first I couldn’t even figure out where the similarities were, I had to listen to ‘Good Time’ again before catching on. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens!

  2. Oh my gosh. So ridiculous. “Someone stole the way I sing my OH’s!!” Seriously? They’re not even THAT similar. Wow.

    • Haha that seems to be the general agreement right now, that it’s not similar ENOUGH. I guess we’ll have to wait and see what happens in court!

  3. haha this is a joke. seriously there are only so many ways of singing “oh’s”. she should’ve just never said anything. calling attention to yourself by suing someone for this ridiculous reason isn’t going to help your career. and its a shame cause she is kind of good!
