The year was 2002. Britney Spears was the hottest pop star in the world, and at just 20 years old, she already released her third wildly successful studio album, Britney. But music was not enough for the young star, and like many others before (and after), Britney made her big screen debut in the Shonda Rimes-penned flick Crossroads.
Crossroads tells the story of Lucy (played by Britney), the sweet and perfect class valedictorian, who heads out on a road trip with her two childhood best friends, prom queen Kit (Zoë Saldaña) and pregnant Mimi (Taryn Manning). The only problem is the three of them went their separate ways long ago, but kept their childhood pact to meet up on prom night to dig up their time capsule. Along with a guy they just met (who may or may not be a killer), the three girls drive cross-country so Mimi can compete in a singing contest in Los Angeles, Kit can meet up with her fiancé, and Lucy can be reunited with her estranged mother. But they soon found out nothing was turning out like they hoped.
The movie was a hit at the box office, but critics weren’t quite as generous. Regardless of being panned, the movie has remained a classic chick flick/road trip movie. What better way to remember the movie, more than 14 years later, than by looking back on some of the songs that made it so great? From Madonna to ‘N Sync and, of course, Britney, the soundtrack would still make a perfect playlist for any road trip with your best friends!
