It’s always great to have new music always coming out for you to explore and fall in love with. But it’s even better when new music is released by your favourite artists. Blake Shelton has always been a favourite of mine, and more so after seeing him perform a few times over the last six years. His quirky, smart-ass attitude and reputation for catchy and meaningful tunes have a way of reeling you in. His 9th studio album, If I’m Honest is one that will quickly rise to the top of the charts. His classic southern voice mixed with lyrics that have a lot of obvious meaning, creates an emotional and lovable roller coaster you can’t help but feel.
When comparing albums, the one I reviewed of Keith Urban’s Ripcord is the complete opposite of Shelton’s new album. If I’m Honest has a more traditional country sound but just as equally great. I love how he sticks to his routes and allows himself to create new tunes while still staying to what he knows. While some may see this as not moving forwards, some artists – like Blake Shelton – know how to keep producing great music.
A theme I found that weaved in and out of the 15 tracks on this album was heartbreak. And before you all pipe up and ask, “well, isn’t that all country music songs?”, the answer is no. Not all country music songs relay around heartbreak. With the somewhat recent announcement of Blake Shelton’s divorce of fellow country superstar Miranda Lambert, I can’t help but feel like his album is riddled of songs that have to relate to her and their breakup. The song “She’s Got a Way With Words” is just one song I can point out that makes me feel as if this album was created around what happened to him in his private affairs.
In that sense though, he’s also got a duet with his current girlfriend (and co-star of The Voice), Gwen Stefani. His most recent single “Go Ahead and Break My Heart”. If I’m Honest comes around in a circle, telling a full story of a heart breaking and then falling in love once again. Obviously there are other songs that aren’t in relation to the sensitive issue of the heart. Some of my non-heartbreak favourites include “Green” and “Friends”. They’re catchy, a lot of fun and typical Blake Shelton. If you DO need a good break-up song however, I would take a listen to “She’s Got a Way With Words” (as previously listed), or my favourite “Every Goodbye”.
Blake Shelton’s album If I’m Honest is available everywhere and on itunes.
He will be performing at this year’s Boots & Hearts Music Festival, which will take place between August 4th and 7th, 2016 in Oro Medonte, Ontario!
