Just as there are many types of musicians, there are many types of music. Country music may be just a genre in itself, but many are still surprised to find that there are many different types of country music. In the last few weeks I’ve reviewed Keith Urban’s new album Ripcord, which is the very definition of “new country” and even though you hear the country, it makes you wonder if it could be Top 40. Then you’ve got Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest. While it still boasts the sound of “new country”, it’s still rooted in a more traditional sound.
Dierks Bentley is yet another distinct country artist that has a completely different sound from the rest. His 10th studio album Black, released May 27, 2017 is full of new music with a familiarity relating back to his previously released albums. He has this laid back way to his music and it is a common theme throughout his music career. While the songs are obviously new and different from the previous, I can’t help but find a common connection.
To put an example out there, his single off his last album “Drunk on a Plane” has a fun, party vibe even though he’s singing about being ditched at the alter. “Mardi Gras”, a track on Black, is based on getting drunk and trying to keep up with a beautiful girl, it still has a similarity I can’t help but notice. That being said, I’m in no way saying this is a bad thing. His songs are still catchy and original and most definitely Dierks Bentley. When you hear his song on the radio or in your headphones, you know it’s him.
One track I loved would have to been “Different For Girls”. While some who hear this may say it classifies girls as the more “emotional” when that’s not the case, but let’s be real. Girls are more sensitive and this song basically expresses girls feel the heartbreak of a broken relationship a little differently then men. It’s a catchy yet chill song that wouldn’t surprise me if it made it’s way to radio airwaves as a future single.
Black will definitely fit in nicely with every thing Dierks Bentley is. His laid back style suits him to the core and I wouldn’t change anything about his unique style. Check him out you love country music but don’t want the high-energy vibe like Keith Urban or a strictly traditional sound like Chris Stapleton. You’ll get lost in the sound and find yourself just relaxing and enjoying what Dierks Bentley has to give.
