The NXNE Billions Showcase on Friday night featured Escondido, DIANA, and Cold Specks at Lee’s Palace.

DIANA is a Toronto synthpop band, whose debut album Perpetual Surender was longlisted for the 2014 Polaris Music Prize. Their live performance included an amazing saxophone player and backup singers. DIANA brought the energy with their more upbeat songs and toned it down for the quieter ones. A particularly poignant moment was when the lead singer, Carmen Elle, talked about how scared she was the first time she used the pronoun “she” in one of her love songs. DIANA brought a cheer from the crowd after dedicating the song to the LGBT community.

Cold Specks is the stage name for Ladan Hussein, a singer-songwriter from Toronto. Her voice is so powerful and practically oozes with soul. During she alternated between playing the guitar and singing backed by an electronic music board. Her guitar picking technique is somewhat reminiscent of Valerie June.
