With his new album Last Year Was Complicated due out next week, Nick Jonas is sharing a behind-the-scenes look at his life and the recording process with his fans.
The docu-series — aptly titled Last Year Was Complicated — premiered exclusively on Tidal, but luckily for us, the first episode is now available for streaming on YouTube.
In the 12-minute video, Nick is joined by his Kingdom co-star, Jonathan Tucker, and discusses his love of “winter wonderlands,” his awkward encounter with Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, and how his breakup with Olivia Culpo inspired his new album.
“There’s no better release for me than creating,” Nick said. “I just had to do it. I had that instinct. The minute she left, I was alone in my apartment, I was like ‘I have to come, and get out of the city, and write.’ And I came up here, with a trusted group of collaborators. Immediately, I was okay.”
“The music is the best therapist I’ve ever had,” he continued.
Nick also talks about the infamous Jonas Brothers split.
“There were probably some family issues that needed to be sorted out,” he said. “At some point I need to be able to look at it with a positive angle. It does suck that my 13- to 20-year-old years come with a lot of regret, almost, in a way.”
And for any fans wondering: yes, we get a glimpse of Nick shirtless and in a towel. You’re welcome.
