I was first introduced to this song via my friend’s Snapchat. She saw Selena live in concert recently, and thanks to her, I got to hear this amazing tune. With subtle electronic/house vibes, a catchy whistle section, and smooth beats, this song is a late contender and potential underdog for 2016’s song of summer. Though songs of summer tend to be more upbeat, Gomez’s track still screams “summer” to me, and pumps me up for the fun, wild nights that the summer heat brings (i.e. chips, my bed, and Netflix).
The music video for this song is beautiful, classy, and elegant; utilizing a black and white aesthetic, Gomez looks strong, yet vulnerable. “Kill Em With Kindness” is arguably a response track to Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” and shows how to effectively end a fight; Gomez has taken the high road, and has therefore elevated herself above the pettiness that is media-perpetuated relationship drama.
