Die Mannequin - Never born a Failure

It's always very difficult to know exactly what to expect from an upcoming interview. I've learned a lot since starting with CONFRONT Magazine, back in December 2006, but I'm always very anxious and feel somewhat clueless as to how things will develop; a feeling that just adds to the challenge of trying to get the best out of an artist. That level of stress was raised significantly higher when I was asked to cover Die Mannequin, a fairly new and young rock-alternative band from Toronto, Canada.

Discovering Alexisonfire

In the eighteen months I have been doing interviews for CONFRONT Magazine, I have come across artists I was a huge fan of, some whose music I enjoyed but whose careers I knew little about and some I knew of but nothing else. In all situations there's something to be gained; be it the dream of meeting one's idols, insight into the minds of those who have managed to follow their dreams or even the joy of discovering something new.

In His Own Words - A Conversation with Ben Lee

It's official: I LOVE Ben Lee. Granted I'm easily swayed; a genuine smile and displayed interest goes a long way with me. But with Ben Lee, there is something more. We caught up with the 29 year old Australian a little over a month ago, when he stopped in Montreal to perform at the Theatre Juste Pour Rire, a small and intimate venue.

I've been sitting here, for what seems like hours, trying to figure out an angle for this article and after many false starts, I'm no further ahead. To say this interview was easy would be rather untruthful. Interesting and animated, certainly; but easy and pleasant, not exactly. Our introduction to band members Justin Warfield and Adam Bravin was certainly not one we had expected.

The setting was one I was familiar with: tour bus backroom, leather couches, small diner table, crappy acrylic accordion drapes, the smell of too many boys living in the same small space... yet something felt awkward; different somehow. I was nervous.

Blaqk Audio: A conversation with Davey Havok and Jade Puget

My introduction to electronic band Blaqk Audio, was one that I shall not soon forget. Certainly I was familiar with AFI, Davey Havok and Jade Puget's primary project, but given that I had never been a big fan of the California quartet or an avid follower of the electronic genre, I hadn't heard of Blaqk Audio until SteveK, CONFRONT's resident critic, reviewed Blaqk Audio's first release, 'CexCells'.

CONFRONT Magazine: A Year in the Making

CONFRONT Magazine is one year old. Who would have thought all those months ago that a year later we would have managed to come as far as we have. Though not many people are aware of this, CONFRONT Magazine was primarily created as a means to an end. This is true of almost everything you'll say, but the fact is that for CONFRONT's Arts and Visuals director, Christine, and myself, this venture was a not only a way to blend the world of music - our passion - and our fields of study, Photography and Literature respectively, but also a way for us to showcase a project on the band 30 Seconds to Mars and their fan base, The Echelon, that we had spent the summer of 2006 working on.

Shiny Toy Guns - Supersonic Overdrive

Shiny Toy Guns is another one of those bands I discovered while surfing MySpace. It's an addictive pastime but one that provides much entertainment and allows me to make wonderful discoveries, such as this band. I was immediately hooked by the music and the obvious contrast of sounds and vocals. My interest peeked, I made the usual rounds; Wikipedia, Purevolume, the band's Official Website, and was intrigued by the world they have created for themselves. Few people have managed to utilize the new media as effectively as this quartet.

Cobra Starship: As Legend Would Have It

As legend would have it, Cobra Starship was born in the deserts of Arizona, where one faithful night, while Gabe Saporta sought to discover his true purpose and meaning, a cobra bit his neck. It was then that the cobra foretold of mankind's eventual demise. His mission, the mystic Cobra told Saporta: to lead the human race to its inevitable end with "style"; his purpose: to "[teach] hipsters to not take themselves so seriously and tell emo kids to stop being pussies."
