Albert Hammond JR: ¿Como Te Llama?
Albert Hammond JR is best known as the rhythm guitarist for the Strokes. However, he also has a side career as a soloist, and his second solo effort, ‘¿Como Te Llama?’ is quite an interesting work.
This album is not unlike the solo work of John Lennon, and uses a similar style to the late, lamented sole talent of the Beatles. There’s a staccato return on the vocals, and the guitar is the driving instrument accompanying those vocals. “In My Room”, is an excellent example of Hammond putting his own spin on that classic Lennon style, though it is on “GFC”, the first single off ‘¿Como Te Llama?’ that Hammond outshines his influence.
Hammond waivers between post-Punk Brit-Pop and American Garage Rock throughout, capably flowing from song to song and style to style. This creates an important cohesion and direction to the album. When Hammond throws a change-up, as with the song ‘Victory At Monterey’ which doesn’t sound much like the rest of the album, he manages to keep the new musical element from sounding out of place with the other songs.
‘¿Como Te Llama?’ is enjoyable, well written, competently produced and capably performed. The studio recordings feel a little restrained, which only makes me all the more anxious to see Hammond perform this work, live.
