Doing What They Do

June 25th, 2008 - Written by stevek

If you like angst-ridden pop rock with Emo highlights, then ‘Rotation’, the latest offering from Cute Is What We Aim For, is right up your alley. It has a rather generic feel to it, inasmuch as it sounds rather similar to all the other angst-ridden pop rock with Emo highlights out there.

The songs are all amped-out anthems, perfect for high-volume MP3 blasting, or singing along to at the next all-ages show. Even the ballads, like “Safe Ride”, my personal favorite on this album, are up-tempo, though somehow that works to the advantage of the music.

Despite its generic interchangeability with most other music in the genre, this album has a lot of redeeming qualities to it. The aforementioned “Safe Ride” is a shining example of the lengths one goes to when in the throes of unrequited love. “Miss Sobriety” is a nice piece about someone who is finally hitting rock-bottom, without being preachy and whiny; it’s done as a monologue to Sobriety, if Sobriety were a woman. “Time” is the closest this album comes to a ballad, and it is a poetic little song about love gone wrong at the end of a relationship.

All in all ‘Rotation’ isn’t a bad album, it just doesn’t quite ever get up enough momentum to be the lead dog in the pack. It’s enjoyable enough, and is a good showing for Cute Is What We Aim For’s sophomore release.
