Chiodos - Life on the Road

June 25th, 2008 - Written by gemma

Seeing as how Chiodos is one of my favorite bands and my interview with drummer, Derrick Frost, is the first interview I’ve ever done, I was feeling a little anxious as I walked toward the tour busses at the back of the venue, where my meeting was scheduled to take place.

Like any fan, I of course have my favourite band member. That’s not the say that I dislike or don’t care about the others, but my interests are more directed toward front man, Craig Owens and guitarist, Jason Hale. Not for any particular reason other than they are the two I am most familiar with. That’s why I was happy to learn that my interview was with drummer, Derrick Frost, so that I might learn something new. We settled into a comfortable, out of the way, spot and after our hellos and how-are-yous, we began our conversation.

To begin, Derrick gave me a quick recap of how the band got together: “Four of the dudes went to high school together, two dudes started with an acoustic project, two others joined from a different band and Jason and I moved from Texas…” When I seemed surprised to hear that he had moved from Texas to Michigan to join the band, he added: “It wasn’t that hard. I mean I took a bus out there and just tried out, you know. I didn’t have that much going on. I had already graduated from high school.”

At his mention of high school, I wondered if he was a good student - it was a little random, granted, but it’s something I often wonder of celebrities. According to Derrick, he was.

“I was a pretty good student; Honor Roll most of the time, except senior year. I mean, everyone takes a little break senior year. My favorite class was obviously music. I did jazz band, marching band with concert band. My least favorite class was probably Chemistry so I pretty much got by by cheating off of my girlfriend at the time and it’s honestly true, I got a C in senior year and passed.”

We often hear stories from celebrities relating to their high school days and subsequent fame drawing old acquaintances, and even adolescent enemies, out of the woodworks. When I questioned Derrick on the matter he replied: “I’ve had people email me saying ‘Oh I went to high school with you, do you remember me?’ It’s just like ‘no… I didn’t hang out with you’. But most of the people I hung out with in high school, that I was really close with, I’m still friends with. They’re just back in Texas living their lives and stuff.”
