Franz Ferdinand: Tonight
January 28th, 2009 - Written by stevek
The whimsical music group Franz Ferdinand are back with their latest release, ‘Tonight’. Once again they rely on eclectic, infectious, repetitive music and lyrics, blended into elaborate and clever songs.
The weakness of this album is how very much it sounds like their last album, ‘You Could Have It So Much Better’. Particularly, the song “No You Girls” sounds very much like “Do You Want To”. It is hard to hold this against the album, because the song “No You Girls” for all its similarity to its predecessor is just as infectious, just as rhythmic and just as much fun.
There are a number of different versions of the songs from this album available out there, including the inevitable iTunes exclusives (of course, those of you who favour reasonably-priced MP3 players over iPods will have to download these from a P2P network), an available-in-Europe-only boxed set which includes a bonus disc called ‘Blood’ with dub versions of the album tracks. These are also available online, if you know where to look.
Although the bonus tracks that are floating around out there are a value-added feature, they aren’t essential listening. The 12 tracks, including “Katherine Kiss Me” (which is a stripped-down, acoustic version of “No You Girls”) represent a complete album.
This is light-hearted, entertaining fun. All the more so if you’re a fan of Franz Ferdinand. Music snobs and cultural elitists will probably look down on this one with disdain, but, who cares what they think? Have a listen, have some fun, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself dancing along while waiting for the bus.
