Our Lady Peace – Burn, Burn

July 29th, 2009 - Written by Admin

In 2005 the band released their sixth studio album. It was later discovered b that ‘Healthy in Paranoid Times’ nearly tore Our Lady Peace apart, due to the 1165 days spent putting the album together. This record made OLP realize that if they wanted ‘to make it work’ in the future, they would need a different approach to the recording process.

This brings us to ‘Burn Burn’, their most recent album; about which front man Raine Maida said it was the ‘best to-date’. They began work on ‘Burn, Burn’ in 2007 at Maida’s home studio. CONFRONT asked Jeremy more about this experience:

“In terms of the studio, it was great because it was in his house; so we were all living there and we’d get up and start recording right away and work full days. We’d get a lot of work done.”

This was also the first time that the band worked without a major producer- instead Raine took over the role. Jeremy explained to us why this worked in their favor:

“On this record we knew we didn’t want to make it all in 30 days so we couldn’t just go into the studio with the producer and think we’d do a week here and a week there; and it was just a lot easier to do it ourselves. We ended up being a lot happier by doing it ourselves.”

By working alone and really focusing on the music themselves, they were able to create a compilation of 10 songs that they all loved and could agree upon.

“We didn’t even listen to the stuff we’d record and we’d move on and on and after 2 years we’d listen back to stuff from the beginning and whatever stood out on its own was the song that made it,” Jeremy said about how they chose which tracks made it to the album.

The band also tried something they had never attempted on previous records: they created certain musical arrangements on the spot. Jeremy went into more detail during our interview about this process:

“We were able to make the arrangements on this record a little tougher, weird and quirky and it added the element of the seat of the pants and nervousness thing because the arrangements were fresh while we were recording them.”

An example of this would be in the song ‘Escape Artist’ which Jeremy pointed out has “a little bit of reckless abandonment in it” because they barely knew the arrangement for the song while tracking it. He also mentioned that the song was one of his favorites off the album, along with ‘Refuge’ and ‘Paper Moon’.

The album’s first single, ‘All You Did Was Save My Life’, has been an instant hit among fans and shows a different side to Our Lady Peace when compared to previous albums.

With so many records and such a different approach to this new one, what can fans expect from ‘Burn, Burn’?

“Well it’s just an honest rock record and it’s very simple in terms of set up with guitar on the left and right, bass, drums and vocals. People should expect OLP at its best in a sense.” Jeremy said convincingly.
