Our Lady Peace – Burn, Burn

July 29th, 2009 - Written by Admin

We wanted to go more in-depth after discussing ‘Burn, Burn’, in the hopes of finding out why Our Lady Peace has such staying power in the music industry and what makes them so successful.

According to Jeremy, it all comes down to working hard, playing and practicing. Looking back at music’s history, he brought up the 60’s and 70’s, a time when artists played “7 or 8 times a week, every day or twice a day practicing like crazy”. He went on to explain that that back in the day, it was through this constant live practice that these bands became so successful.  However, today musicians barely get the chance to play twice a month in the same city, let alone more than once a week.

“Now-a-days if you’re a band and you get lucky by being creative and having a song that luckily becomes a smash on the radio, you have to live up to that sound and that stuff that you created in the studio, and it’s hard to match that without playing 50 times more gigs.” He added that “the practice isn’t happening [for bands today] and you’re not playing in front of people enough to try and achieve that [studio] recording.” That’s why people really like to see bands that have already got that stuff figured out.”

OLP’s long history of success and achievements made us curious to find out if there was one particular moment that really stood out for the band. Interestingly enough, Jeremy did not bring up the 10 MuchMusic nominations, the 4 Juno awards they’ve won or the 5 million records they’ve sold. Instead, he reminisced about the previous night’s show at the Ottawa Blues Fest. Their set attracted over 30, 000 people- a first for them while playing in the nation’s capital.

“To have that this late in our career is a good feeling. These are unachievable goals. These are things that just kind of happen. Having that many people come out to our show isn’t something we try and do. We just concentrate on the things we can achieve. That comes down to musical ability.”

The last thing we spoke about with Jeremy is the chemistry within the band – in great part what they owe their career and success longevity to. He went on to tell us about how OLP has chemistry when they write, record and play on stage: “It’s just easy for us to make music together.” He said on the topic.

Once our interview was over and we were heading back outside, we briefly spoke about how OLP has become a musical influence for many aspiring musicians, including Ten Second Epic; a band that CONFRONT recently interviewed. Upon hearing this news, Jeremy laughed and said it was an honor to hear that people looked up to them and their music.

Later that night we attended the band’s private show. Though it was rather short – roughly 45 minutes –it was followed by promises of a longer show during their upcoming tour. The concert was free to attendees which is something that you rarely see musicians do today; and it is the perfect example of how well OLP treats their fans. On stage, the band’s chemistry was immediately noticeable as they showcased songs from their most recent album including the first single ‘All You Did Was Save My Life’ and the rocking ‘Monkey Brains’. They also played some classics including ‘Angels Losing Sleep’, ‘Innocent’, ‘Somewhere Out There’ and ‘Clumsy’. These hits had the crowd screaming for more long after the Encore, ‘Naveed’, was over.
