Semi-Charmed Kind-Of Come-Back

Third Eye Blind: Ursa Major

It’s been six long years since we last heard from this iconic        San-Francisco Alt-Rock sensation.  Success came fast for them twelve years ago, with the release of their self-titled debut, in 1997.  Three singles from that album, “Semi-Charmed Kind-of Life”, “How’s it Goanna Be”, and “Jumper” remain their most easily-recognized hits.

Their 1999 follow-up album, ‘Blue’, went platinum, as the band’s touring/studio schedule became increasingly hectic.  Problems and hilarity ensued, leading to a four-year gap before their next album, ‘Out of the Vein’, in 2003.  The band went on “hiatus” and most of us started waiting for the seemingly-inevitable ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation.  During the 2003 merger that saw Elektra Records merged into Atlantic, 3eb frontman, Stephan Jenkens, very publicly declared that ‘Out of the Vein’ was not properly marketed or given the funds to be able to release a music video.

Work began on ‘Ursa Major’ in 2003, but creative issues hobbled the process.  Third Eye Blind therefore see its completion and release six years later as their “coming out of hibernation”; hence the album title, ‘Ursa Major’.

There are 12 songs (not counting iTunes exclusives; I won’t discuss or listen to thesebecause I boycott iTunes) on the album, all of which have that unmistakable 3eb sound.  The lead single, “Don’t Believe a Word” is already getting airplay in places civilized enough to have a New Rock / Alternative radio station in their market.  As soon as you hear it, there is no doubt that Third Eye Blind are back.

The rest of the songs are likewise quintessential Third Eye Blind.  They are also, however, much more pensive.  Songs like “Sharp Knife”, “About to Break” and “Water Landing” are much more contemplative, much more poignant than any of their previous work.  This is a more mature Third Eye Blind; these are songs written and performed by people who have gone through heartache and tragedy, and come out scarred and wiser.  This album is worthwhile not only for veteran fans but for new listeners, as well.  ‘Ursa Major’ is, arguably, one of the best comeback albums of the last several years.
