I Can’t Believe It’s Not The Cure!

The New York Indie scene is one of my favourite music scenes. These last couple of years have seen bands like Interpol, MGMT and Amazing Baby, among many others take to the popular stage, their music being played on TV (usually the CW), movies and wherever else good music is heard.
There is no doubt that The Bravery belongs in the pantheon of great New York Indie bands. However, despite their clever and provocative lyrics, musical skill and all, I really can’t get past the fact that The Bravery in general and ‘Stir the Blood’ in particular sound exactly like the Cure.
I’m serious; Sam Endicott is doing a spot-on Robert Smith, except for on songs like “Slow Poison”, which sounds almost exactly like Modern English’s “I Melt With You”. Now, the band makes no bones about being very entrenched in a revival of Post Punk and New Wave (Arguably both the same genre), but the thing is this disc really sounds more like a rehash than a revival.
Don’t get me wrong; the album opens with a great anthem, “Adored”, and most of the tracks are infectiously danceable and rocking, in that New Wave / Synth-Pop kind of way. However, we’ve heard this done before. And as good as this album’s 11 songs are, the lack of originality overshadows this album.
